The House That She Built Iowa

Sunday, January 15, 2023 – 11am – 2pm
We are launching The House That She Built Iowa at the Home & Remodeling Show! We have partnered with Professional Women in Building, Iowa Skilled Trades and the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity to put on a panel build at this year’s Home & Remodeling Show. This three-day event will be a women-led build, with the panels built being used at the Habitat for Humanity’s Hammers & Heels Women Build in 2023.
The House That She Built originated as a book that was inspired by a team of real women who came together from around the country to build a one-of-a-kind house – The House That She Built. Since the launch of the book, a movement was created to focus on supporting workforce development initiatives in the construction industry by generating awareness of the skilled trades to one of the largest underrepresented communities, women.
The Home Builders Association of Greater Des Moines, Professional Women in Building and Iowa Skilled Trades have joined the movement to ambassador the program through The House That She Built Iowa. Our focus is to empower women to join the construction industry, change the perception of career-based biases and provide an educational platform for women in the community.
Youth ages 16 and older may volunteer on a Habitat construction site, as long as an adult (21 yrs+) serves with them during the duration of their shift. Additionally, youth under the age of 18 will need to submit a physical copy of the waiver form (located here) with parent/guardian signature to bring upon their arrival to volunteer.
